Mental Health Outreach Worker (Full-time)

The Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health is an award-winning Health Access Centre that provides holistic health services to First Nation, Inuit and Métis people living in Ottawa – one of the fastest growing and diverse urban Indigenous communities in Canada. As a Frontline Worker with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or Psychology and three years’ experience in mental health services and addictions support, you will want to consider this exceptional opportunity.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide client-centered, culturally-based addiction and mental health support to Indigenous people in Ottawa, including but not limited to assessment, referrals, case management and follow-up, advocacy, crisis intervention, and ongoing support;
  • Provide outreach, crisis intervention and mental wellness supports through Wabano’s COVID-testing van and our homeless outreach van;
  • Appropriately maintain the records of all clients, and ensure confidentiality;
  • Provide monthly reports on activities to the Mental Health Director or Mental Wellness Team Lead;
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and facilitation of mental health events and programming, including psycho-education workshops/groups and healing/sharing circles;
  • Work collaboratively with all staff to create and support Wabano events such as the Annual General Meeting, the Gala, and community holiday celebrations;
  • Maintain and strengthen a positive working relationship with other community agencies.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology or relevant health care field;
  • Three to five years clinical experience working in the addictions and/or mental health field in a community based setting;
  • Thorough knowledge in areas of trauma, family violence, abuse, addictions, homelessness;
  • Familiarity with motivational interviewing and other interventions for individuals with concurrent disorders;
  • Knowledge of &/or sensitivity to various Indigenous cultures;
  • Experience in working with Canadian Indigenous clients;
  • Openness to traditional Indigenous treatment practices and healing methods;
  • Experience in crisis and risk situations and outreach;
  • Ability to work with high risk, difficult to reach population;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends;
  • Ability to work both in a multi-disciplinary team and independently;
  • A self-starter who is reliable and takes initiative;
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Specifications:

  • Preference will be given to those of Indigenous descent (First Nations, Inuit or Métis); please self-identify;
  • Successful applicants will be required to provide a criminal reference check for working with the vulnerable population;
  • The position requires First Aid/CPR certification; successful applicants who do not have the training will be required to obtain one within the first six months of employment.
