How do we measure this identity?
Who decides?
Why does it matter?

The Symposium will be held in Ottawa on February 21 & 22, 2024.
Introduction to Symposium
The Wabano Symposium, titled “Who We Are: Exploring Indigenous Identity,” is both timely and crucial, addressing a notable increase in claims of indigenous identity that extend beyond academia into various sectors, including judicial courts and police services. More individuals are asserting Indigenous status to access services that support indigenous people in receiving culturally appropriate assistance.
Simultaneously, a growing number of organizations, institutions, and government departments are committed to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) calls to action of enhancing Indigenous representation in their workforce, programming, and partnerships. Creating policy that outlines identity is key to achieving this.
For those navigating discussions and developing policy on the complex issue of identity, this symposium will provide invaluable insights. Indigenous experts will discuss mainstream and culturally-based markers such as kinship ties, transcending the confines of status, beneficiary, and membership cards.
