Indigenous Cultural Safety is anti-racism training from an Indigenous perspective. If you are a service provider working with Indigenous people, Wabano’s training options are here to support you in your journey as a helper. This training is a first step in a life-long journey of learning.
Indigenous Cultural Safety Courses
Wabano-win: The Art of Seeing Clearly is a learning journey with courses that teach participants to better understand two core things:
- how to contribute to improving Indigenous health, and
- how to create safe spaces for Indigenous people in their practice.
The costs for some courses are partially covered by the LHIN while other courses are not. Please contact one of our ICS Coordinators for costs and registration information.

Offered in an intimate, culturally-based group setting, this in-depth anti-racism session provides participants with:
- Historical context of Indigenous racism in Canada.
- Exploration of how current Indigenous issues impact Canadians and our healthcare system in Canada.
- Hands-on and interactive activities.

- Healthcare professionals working at organizations funded through the LHIN.
LHIN Subsidized cost: $50 per person. - The general public with particular relevance to healthcare professionals and other frontline service providers.
General Cost: $600 per person.

The online Core San’yas ICS courses are designed with the busy lives of service providers in mind. Learning is self-paced over eight weeks, and typically takes 10-12 hours to complete.
Ontario Core ICS Health
This online course focuses on issues that are specifically relevant for healthcare professionals working with Indigenous people in Ontario. The course examines culture, stereotyping, and the consequences and legacies of colonization. You will learn about racial terminology, diversity, and aspects of colonial history such as Indian Residential Schools and Indian Hospitals. Skilled facilitators guide and support each learning through interactive online course materials.
Who is it for? Healthcare professionals working at organizations funded through the LHIN, no charge.
Timeframe: 10-12 hours of course work over 8 weeks.

NOTE: The online Core Health program meets the accreditation criteria of The College of Family Physicians of Canada. This self-learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 16 Mainpro+ credits. Core Health training is an accredited Self-Assessment Program (SAP) eligible for up to 8.0 section 3 credits as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. If you are submitting the online ICS course for accreditation on the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada website, you must select “San’yas: Indigenous Cultural Safety Training” as the SAP Name.
This online course has been modified for people working in mental health and substance use services, focusing on issues specifically relevant for mental health professionals working with Indigenous people in Ontario. From Bystander to Ally
Designed to deepen your cultural understanding while helping you implement your Indigenous cultural safety training, From Bystander to Ally will keep you on your path to becoming an effective ally for Indigenous people impacted by racism, bias, and stereotyping.
Who is it for? Healthcare and mental health professionals working at organizations funded through the LHIN, no charge.
Note: To participate you must have successfully completed one Core online courses (Core Health or Core Mental Health).
Timeframe: 3-6 hrs of course work over 6 weeks.

Unpacking Colonial Relationships
This advanced level course examines how events of the past have shaped the present. Examining issues such as discovery, assimilation, pathology, colour-blindness, multiculturalism, and reconciliation, this course provides a “counter narrative” to the most commonly held beliefs about Indigenous people.

Timeframe: 8-10 hrs hours of course work over 8 weeks.
