Eye Exam Eligibility and Coverage Information

Wabano’s Eye Clinic is dedicated to supporting the vision health of Wabano registered clients at this time.  This service is available to Indigenous individuals who are on Ontario Works (OW), the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), or have Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) coverage and do not have private insurance, such as employer-provided benefits. Our clinic offers comprehensive eye exams and access to glasses, helping to ensure that everyone has the care they need to maintain their vision and overall well-being.

For Children (0-19 years)

Full Eye Exam (OHIP):
Children are eligible for a comprehensive eye exam every 12 months. Regular eye exams are vital for early detection of any issues that may impact their development and learning.

Partial Eye Exam (OHIP):

Children can also receive a partial eye exam for any reason, and there are no restrictions on frequency for these exams.

For Adults (20-64 years)

Full Medical Eye Exam (OHIP):

OHIP covers annual eye exams if you have certain medical conditions like diabetes, glaucoma, or macular degeneration even if you have private insurance. These exams are essential for early detection and management of eye-related complications.

Partial Medical Eye Exam (OHIP):

A partial medical exam is available if there is a need to examine a condition related to a full exam conducted within the past 12 months. You can have a maximum of two partial exams per year.

Routine Eye Exam Under ODSP or OW:
Adults on Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or Ontario Works (OW) are eligible for a full routine eye exam every 24 months. This exam helps ensure that you maintain optimal vision and eye health.

Routine Eye Exam Under NIHB:
If you do not have a medical condition, and you do not have coverage through ODSP, OW, or private insurance, you are still eligible for a full routine eye exam every 24 months with NIHB coverage.

For Seniors (65+ years)

Full Routine Eye Exam (OHIP):

Seniors are eligible for a full routine eye exam every 18 months. Regular eye exams help detect age-related vision changes and prevent potential issues from going unnoticed.

Full Medical Eye Exam (OHIP):

If you have an eligible condition such as diabetes, glaucoma, or macular degeneration, you’re eligible for a full medical eye exam every 12 months to monitor and manage your condition.

Partial Eye Exam (OHIP):

Seniors can also receive a partial eye exam within 12 or 18 months after a full exam, for any reason. You are eligible for up to two partial exams during this period.

If you have private insurance and NIHB or private only here are some companies that say on their websites they offer direct billing with insurance: Walmart Eye Clinics, Laurier Optical, Vezina Opticians, Hakim Optical.  Before booking with a provider we recommend asking them if they do direct billing to your insurance provider.
