Wabano Kids

Weekly cultural programs that focus on parent-child relationships and child development i.e.:

• Outings that use community resources – i.e. kinder gym, parks, libraries, pools, hikes (medicine walks)
• Storytelling
• Exercise – i.e. Mom & Me Yoga, Walk ‘n Stroll, Powwow Pump
• Community kitchens with traditional foods
• Land based activities and traditional teachings

Wabano offers its drop-in service at various times throughout the week including evenings. Weekly programs and parenting classes will be scheduled at varying times to maximize participation (some day programs, some evening programs, and some weekend programs).

This long-standing program, funded by MCYS, works to reunite families involved in the child welfare system. The proposed program will work with Circle of Care to support caregivers in the process of reunification with their children and to build the necessary web of supports for the families.

Wabano Early Years Family Support Coordinator will support the family with wrap around services, including referrals to primary care or other regulated health professionals. Wabano has an established medical clinic on-site. Not only will referrals be made to the clinic as needed, but on-site medical and other regulated health professionals (i.e. onsite dental clinic) can attend programs as needed to provide education and support, and build trusting relationships with families.

The Family Support Coordinator in particular identify supports needed by families, providing advocacy and navigation to help families get the care they need.

Wabano will support families to transition their children into schools through school/Head Start outreach, advocacy and liaison.

In 2010, Wabano created a parenting manual that uses only Indigenous resources and teachings on parenting. The only manual of its kind in the country, this manual includes teaching topics and activities for parents. The proposed program will use this manual as the foundation for its traditional parenting classes.
