Wabano has partnered with Operation Come Home to offer training and work experience amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Indigenous youth can participate in both pre-employment development training and an onsite work placement for local COVID-19 Rapid Response initiatives such as Respite Centers, Food Banks and Community Health Organizations.
This is a paid opportunity that runs for 10 weeks starting November 16, 2020.

Pre-Employment training: Nov 16-27, 2020 (2 weeks paid)
- Youth will attend a total of 10 workshops to help prepare them for the workforce.
- Workshop topics include:
- Onsite job knowledge: financial literacy, conflict resolution, first aid, safe food handling and
- Interviewing skills: resume and cover letter writing, mock interviews.
- Workshops will be offered in person and over zoom. All health and safety precautions will be taken to minimize risk.
- Youth must attend all workshops within these two weeks to be eligible for an onsite work placement.
Pre-Placement: Dec 2020
- After successful completion of the training, youth will be assigned to a work placement.
- Work placements will be with local partner agencies who offer essential services to the Ottawa community during the pandemic. Wabano will work with each youth to assign them to a work experience that is meaningful to them.
- Youth will be introduced to their host agency lead.
Onsite work placement: Jan – Mar 2021 (8 weeks paid)
- Youth will work a total of 37.5 hours per week for 8 weeks.
- Start date will be determined with the host agency.
Compensation
- Youth will receive a salary of $16/hour for 10 weeks (training and onsite work placement)
- Transportation costs and/or childcare expenses can be reimbursed upon request.
