Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Director of the Programs the Coordinator / Lead takes an active approach in the development and implementation of culturally appropriate programming for urban Indigenous seniors to provide them support in improving health and maintaining self-control over their own health.

Some of the responsibilities of this position are:

  •  Leading and supporting team members through completing team and individual work plans, meeting goals, reporting and problem solving;
  • Sourcing consultants (e.g. Elders, traditional educators, facilitators);
  • Providing orientation to staff and consultants;
  • Supporting team to provide case management and systems navigation to eligible individuals and manage referrals from Indigenous and mainstream organizations;
  • Building and maintaining relationships with community partners;
  • Reporting and program evaluation;
  • Develop, implement and evaluate culturally- based health promotion programs and activities to promote healthy lifestyle choices and active living in Indigenous Seniors;
  • Develop the public health skills and capacities of Indigenous seniors and empower them to make healthy choices (nutrition, physical activity and commercial tobacco prevention);
  • Develop and support local partnerships to broaden the local response to health inequities;
  • Develop and deliver culturally specific training (for example, to health professionals, volunteers, community groups) to increase community understanding and knowledge of Indigenous seniors’ health and well being;
  • Actively include current knowledge, practice and trends in health promotion theory and traditional teachings;

 Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary completion in Health Promotion, Social Services, Geriatrics, Social Services or other related field of study;
  • Three years of experience in program coordination, health promotion or healthy activity coordination;
  • Experience as a coordinator preferably in a non-profit;
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous seniors;
  • Knowledge of social, economic and health concerns relevant to the urban Indigenous community;
  • Proven ability to positively work with a team and independently;
  • Strong organizational skills with evidence of oral presentation skills and written communication skills for report writing;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint;
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends;
  • Clear criminal reference check to work with vulnerable population is required;
  • Completion of First Aid/CPR within the 6 months of hiring.

Salary Range:

$65,000 to 68,000 with benefits.
